Corning announced six months ago that it would seek a buyer for its $1.6 billion laboratory testing business, Corning Clinical Laboratories. After talks with competitors, including the two other major national laboratories, SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories and Laboratory Corp. of America Holdings, reportedly broke down, Corning decided to unload the business on shareholders.
