European Commission director of external relations Eneko Landaburu is suggesting that it may be time to have a pause in enlarging the EU. Accession procedures for Romania and Bulgaria should be advanced to their conclusion, he believes, and those with Croatia and Turkey progressed as soon as possible. But otherwise, it is time to attend to public and political pressure and consider deepening the EU structure rather than widerning it, he told a meeting on February 23 of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), a think tank lobby group that supports corporate interests in the EU.
