Dynal to release improved beads for immunoassays

This article was originally published in Clinica

Biomagnetic separation technology firm Dynal Biotech is launching a new breed of beads that it believes will help companies looking to make automated immunoassays speed up their developments.

Dynabeads MyOne are superparamagnetic one-micron beads that have been designed to optimise the key parameters for immunoassays - bead size, surface area, surface active groups and surface properties such as hydrophobicity and charge, says the Oslo, Norway firm.

Tests of the monosized beads in a variety of existing immunoassays have produced "excellent" results, claims the company. When compared with larger 2.8um beads in a range of immunoassay kits for myoglobulin, D-dimer and Intact PTH, the performance of Dynabeads MyOne "more than matched our expectations, with the same reproducibility qualities", says Jack Andreassen, Dynal's senior international product manager for IVD products.

According to Dynal, the new beads have shown an increased capacity of up to 250%, enabling 60% less beads to be used with no loss in performance. They have also exhibited very good dispersion properties and a slow sedimentation rate during incubation. Their high iron oxide content (37%) have been shown to have "excellent" magnetic properties with fast separation. Antibody immobilisation has ranged from 60-95% binding, depending on the antibody.

The beads will be introduced next week at the American Association for Clinical Chemistry meeting in Los Angeles, California.
