Home healthcare is a well-established segment of the healthcare delivery system. It originated in the US with the establishment of the first home healthcare agencies in the 1880s and entered a period of rapid expansion in the mid-1960s with the establishment of the US government's Medicare programme to fund care for the elderly. The estimated total spending for home healthcare services in the US in 1999 was $36 billion, which, while a substantial figure, accounts for only about 3-4% of the total expenditure on healthcare in the US.
