The Codex Committee of General Principles decides April 3 in Paris not to include the precautionary principle in Codex's draft risk analysis standards for food safety. The principle allows "governments to take certain preventive measures for foods in cases where scientific evidence on the safety of the food is uncertain," says the International Alliance of Dietary Supplement-Food Association. By excluding the principle, a "fair opportunity" is assured for trade in supplement products, says the Council for Responsible Nutrition.
