Academics warn the Australian Research Council’s Discovery Projects plan will cause great harm to medical research, including studies into causes of tuberculosis and avian influenza. The head of the Australian Center For Ancient DNA at the University of Adelaide said ARC changes set to take effect next year could exclude studies on HIV and other viral mutations, as well as epigenetics. The ARC denied its new rules would have that effect, saying new rules governing biomedical research are designed in part to prevent double-dipping. Some scientists claim the policy ignores basic research in favor of applied sciences. (Click here for more)
