The Chinese government will support the transformation of Class II comprehensive hospitals into rehabilitation institutes and the entry of commercial institutes into the field. The authorities will give both public and private health institutions equal footing in their regulation, in order to create fair competition and develop diverse rehabilitation services to meet the country’s various needs. China presently faces an aging population as well as 83 million disabled people and 270 million chronic illness sufferers. Last year, the Ministry of Health tested a comprehensive rehabilitation system in 46 cities throughout 14 provinces.
