Fournier's European Strategy
Executive Summary
To reduce its dependence on a stagnant and price sensitive French market, Fournier has created a low-risk R&D program coupled with an aggressive international acquisition program. The program attempts to take advantage of small-market research opportunities as well as acquisition targets overlooked by large companies or which fall out of mega-mergers. Is this gamble enough to ensure independence for a mid-sized player?

The second has been its joint venture with Bristol-Myers on two of its most important products, a joint venture which allowed Sanofi, in a protected fashion, to learn to compete internationally against the most powerful pharmaceutical marketers in the world. If the company has an Achilles' heel, it is the francocentrism of its marketing and development, and perhaps research as well.
