Medford, New York-based Chembio Diagnostics has appointed Setema, Ethiopia's sole supplier of HIV viral load tests, as distributor of its rapid HIV tests in the country. According to Chembio, the Ethiopian government is currently evaluating the company's HIV 1/2 STAT-PAK product - among other brands of rapid HIV tests - for possible inclusion in a nationwide testing protocol. The country is to receive over $84m in relief funds from the US to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, under an accord signed in February this year. Among Ethiopia's population of over 73 million people, it is estimated that 1.5 million are infected with HIV.
