Executive Summary
FIBER HEALTH CLAIMS IN BOTH GENERALIZED AND PRODUCT-SPECIFIC FORMATS were recommended by David Jenkins, MD/PhD, University of Toronto, at a May 12-13 FDA-sponsored conference on dietary fiber claims. Jenkins suggested that FDA approve one general health claim promoting the chemopreventive and cardiovascular benefits of a high-fiber diet that could be carried on all fiber-containing products, as well as a "much more specific" health claim tailored to the demonstrated benefits of a manufacturer's product. The product claim, he noted, should be supported by in vivo data.
