Executive Summary
Hydroxycarboxylic and ketocarboxylic acids patents held by NeoStrata may be revoked in Europe "on the grounds of lack of novelty and inventive step," the European Patent Office's preliminary opinion states. The technology, held by Eugene Van Scott and Ruay Yu, is used to treat wrinkles and licensed for use in anti-aging remedies by numerous companies. Beiersdorf, SmithKline Beecham, Clarins, Procter & Gamble, L'Oreal and Silvana Seidel all filed notices of opposition with the office in late 1997. NeoStrata was granted the patent in April 1997.
