Japan's health officials are studying the possibility of vaccinating 1.5 million medical professionals against influenza as part of preparation for a pandemic. About 6,400 quarantine inspectors and workers at infectious-disease institutions and others already have been vaccinated with pre-pandemic vaccines in clinical trials to test the stockpiled drugs. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare had planned shots for 10 million people, covering lifeline jobs such as policemen, but has decided to limit the program to doctors, nurses, pharmacists and others in the medical community.
