From Guidant to Abbott: An Interview with John Capek

Executive Summary

Some industry executives argue that the real winner in the battle between Johnson & Johnson and Boston Scientific for Guidant was Abbott, who came away with a bulked up interventional cardiology business and what promises to be the next big winner in drug-eluting stents. John Capek played a major role in growing Guidant's business and, post-sale, helped guide a successful integration within Abbott. Now, he's running all of Abbott's medical device businesses.

Sensing the State of the CRM Market

After years of steady single-digit growth, the cardiac rhythm management market was jump-started this decade by the expansion of implantable cardioverter defibrillators and the development of cardiac resynchronization therapy devices. Those products drove annual growth rates above 20%. But in 2005, this growth came to a screeching halt due to product recalls and other safety issues. To address these concerns, CRM manufacturers are working with the FDA and the Heart Rhythm Society to restore the trust of both implanting physicians and the patient community.

ART: Bucking the Trend in Bioabsorbable Stents

Bioabsorbable stents arouse great enthusiasm among both interventionalists and industry executives, because they have one major advantage over current stents, both bare metal and drug-eluting: they obviate the need for a permanent implant when only a temporary scaffolding effect is needed. Many stent companies are hedging their bets, working on stents that incorporate both drug elution and bioabsorbability--but not Paris-based Arterial Remodeling Technologies, which is arguing that natural healing, not drug therapy, is the best approach to therapeutically active stents.
